Development of sustainability criteria for hydrogen and its derivatives at the global level

Sustainably produced hydrogen can play an important role in the global energy transition. To fully exploit its potential, however, international cooperation is vital. In this project, adelphi, in close collaboration with the Öko-Institut (Institute for Applied Ecology), supported the European Commission, especially DG ENER, in its dialogues with industrial countries on the details of the regulatory framework for the international trade with hydrogen and its derivatives.

The project team provided a critical analysis of the ongoing work of the International Partnership for a Hydrogen Economy (IPHE) to produce a methodology to determine the greenhouse gas emission of different hydrogen production pathways. adelphi also produced factsheets on hydrogen economy, infrastructure, policies and politics in the USA, Canada, India, China and Japan, and supported the Commission in the preparation of its meetings with these countries.

This project took place within the programme “Strategic Partnerships for the Implementation of the Paris Agreement”, which was funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), co-funded by the European Union and implemented by the GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit).
