Empowering Countries to actively engage in the NDC Partnership

The Paris Agreement, adopted in December 2015, aims to limit the average global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, or at least well below 2 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels. Achieving this goal requires countries to implement both adaptation and mitigation measures. The Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are a key component of these efforts, with their implementation—particularly in developing countries—relying on long-term international climate finance commitments. To meet the global targets, many developing countries face challenges in planning NDC updates, implementing them, and integrating new global climate priorities into national climate actions and budgets.

To address these challenges, the NDC Partnership (NDCP) was established in 2016 to support countries in overcoming these implementation barriers. Through a matching process, the NDCP facilitates international support tailored to the specific needs of countries, enabling effective climate planning and implementation.

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH launched the project "Empowering Countries to Actively Engage in the NDC Partnership" to better position disadvantaged countries to access support through the NDCP while promoting ambitious climate actions for the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is achieved by fostering long-term collaboration between partners and the NDCP.

With a pool of experts, adelphi, together with its partner Ricardo, develops and disseminates concepts, tools, best practices, and narratives to support selected NDCP member countries in preparing and implementing their NDC updates. The goal is to strengthen the capacity of national partners to assess and prioritize existing and urgent climate policy requirements and to provide high-quality support in the preparation process.
