Switzerland’s commitment to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 will have far-reaching consequences for its foreign, economic, and security policy—especially in relation to Mediterranean countries reliant on fossil fuel exports. As the global energy transition accelerates, these countries face economic and social challenges that may fuel instability and migration. This project addresses the urgent need to anticipate the international ripple effects of Swiss and EU net zero ambitions, ensuring that policy responses are both proactive and equitable.
adelphi is leading a strategic analysis to identify the risks and opportunities arising from Switzerland’s net zero transition for its international partnerships and security interests. Drawing on extensive expertise in climate diplomacy, risk analysis, and stakeholder engagement, adelphi will provide actionable recommendations to support a fair and conflict-sensitive transition in affected countries. By synthesising cutting-edge research and consulting key stakeholders, adelphi empowers Swiss policymakers to minimise risks and harness new opportunities for cooperation, innovation, and sustainable development.
