Diplomacy

The climate crisis threatens our environment, health, prosperity and security. Global problems demand an international, coordinated response. Climate diplomacy must be a key pillar of foreign policy in the 21st century – foreign policy is climate policy.

We develop ideas to shape international politics:

• We support ambitious international climate policy through dialogue formats like the Transatlantic Climate Bridge and bilateral energy dialogues. We provide support, advice and capacity development in climate negotiations and climate financing and connect climate and foreign policy agendas.
• We research how the climate crisis affects peace and stability and advocate for foreign and security policy that takes the risks of environmental change and ambitious climate action into account. We create foreign and development policy initiatives at global, regional and local levels that foster synergies between climate action and peacebuilding.  
• We support cooperation in international river basins and develop approaches to prevent and resolve conflicts over water and other resources.
• In our research, consultation and global policy dialogues, we contribute to strengthening global common goods in an increasingly borderless world through multilateral environmental agreements and international environmental diplomacy
